ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. (March 15, 2024) – The Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, and Engineering Technology hosted a two-day Consortium for Nuclear Security Advanced Manufacturing enhanced by Machine Learning (NSAM-ML). The event was an opportunity to showcase and discuss research findings and educational initiatives from faculty and students from the involved universities, which, in addition to ECSU, were North Carolina Central University (NCCU) and Southern University Baton Rouge (SUBR).
“The workshop was executed with great success, yielding outcomes crucial for achieving the consortium goals,” said Abdennaceur Karoui, a principal research scholar in the ECSU Division of Academic Affairs. "These outcomes include providing students with essential information, fostering connections between our students and national labs, updating inter-consortium collaborations, planning research exchanges, and refining the consortium roadmap.”
Faculty, post-doctoral students, and students from the ECSU STEM department gave poster presentations, as well as participants from NCCU and SUBR. Students were also able to engage in discussions with six scientists and industry managers.
“This interaction forms a critical component of a career pipeline, guiding future graduates toward research careers or positions within the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE), the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), its branches, and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS),” Karoui said.
Starting Wednesday, March 20 at 3:30 p.m., ECSU will host weekly, afternoon seminars that similarly allow faculty and students to discuss research carried out for the Consortium in their respective fields. The weekly series will occur, depending upon the availability of presenters, on Wednesdays in the ECSU STEM Building. Additionally, the consortium’s principal investigators will inform the audience about outside research activities, laboratory visits and summer research programs.
ECSU will also collaborate with the Center for Computing Research to incorporate some of their seminars into future NSAM-ML Seminar Series events. Additionally, the review of ongoing projects and updates about planned collaborations can be expected at future events.
